Flavoured Oil Recipe

Flavoured Oil & Infused Vinegar Recipes | The Oil House
Flavoured Oil & Infused Vinegar Recipes
Don't you just love flavoured olive oils? Dipping a crusty bread into a bowl, or drizzled over a delicious salad, you really can't go wrong!

Here are two great flavoured oil recipes, easily modified to be whatever infused oil recipe you can imagine. You'll also find an infused vinegar recipe, which you can use as a basic recipe to add your own twist to, and create your own infused vinegar.

To get creative, simply swap out the culinary essential oils for your choice of favourites, and add related herbs, spices or fruit. Makes a great easy DIY gift for someone you love.
Before we start, it's important to know your essential oils. All essential oils are not created equal. You can find out more on our About Oils page. Please only use essential oils labelled as "for culinary use" or food grade essential oils in your recipes.

Also, few things about the video below. It was created for American audiences, so please see the metric conversion recipes following the clip. The essential oils in this video recipe are from the "Vitality" range from Young Living, which are equivalent to our culinary oils collection here in Australia. You can find all our culinary oils in our "essential oils for cooking" collection.

Herb Oil Recipe

Flavoured Oil Cooking Instructions:
1. Pour the olive oil into a big pot or saucepan. Keep on low heat until it starts to bubble.
2. Mix in the herbs and let it cook until the oil is fragrant. Be sure not to brown the herbs.
3. Turn off the heat and let the oil cool.
4. Add the drops of flavoured oil into the mixture. Remember, less is more.  Essential oils are potent, so start with fewer drops.
5. Funnel the mixture into the bottles.

Lemon & Herb Infused Olive Oil
• 300 ml Olive Oil
• 2 drops Rosemary essential oil
• 4 drops Lemon essential oil
• 2 drops Basil essential oil
• Handful of freshly sliced Lemons
• Handful each of Rosemary and Basil

Chilli & Herb Infused Olive Oil:
• 300 ml Olive Oil
• 5 dried Chillies
• 4 fresh Garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced
• Handful of Oregano leaves, or substitute with Rosemary or Thyme
• 1 teaspoon black pepper
• 2 drops Oregano essential oil
• 2 drops Black Pepper essential oil

Infused Vinegar Recipe

Instructions for Vinegar:
1. Slice your favorite fruit.
2. Place into an approximate 178ml bottle or jar.
3. Pour vinegar into a saucepan and bring to a simmer.
4. Pour hot vinegar into your bottle or jar over the fruit.
5. Let it stand at room temperature for 8 hours.
6. Add culinary essential oils.
7. Shake well before using, as oil and vinegar don’t mix!

Citrus Vinegar Recipe:
• 355ml white wine vinegar
• 1 small grapefruit
• 1 small lime
• 1 small orange
• 2 drops Orange essential oil
• 2 drops Lime essential oil
• 2 drops Grapefruit essential oil
Check out our culinary oils range for ideas on what to add to your next oil infusion or flavoured vinegar. Happy creating!

What is a Carrier Oil? Why Do I Need One?

29/6/2020

Carrier Oil

Carrier Oil in Beaker | The Oil House
Carrier Oil
The term carrier oil is one that you will come across in the craft bath and body community, or if you're starting to get into essential oils. So what is a carrier oil?

A carrier oil is simply a "neutral" base. Think of making cordial. You use the concentrated cordial, in a base of water. A carrier oil mixed with an essential oil is just the same.

The essential oil is the concentrate. You only need a small amount to go a long way. Mix any essential oil to a cup of carrier oil and you have just created your first massage oil.

Know Your Carrier Oils

Carrier Oils | The Oil House
Carrier Oils
You probably already own a carrier oil in your house. Olive oil, vegetable oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, and grape seed oil are all used as carrier oils for essential oil blends.

It does not usually matter which variety of carrier oil you use for every day use. I use whatever food grade oil is close at hand. This usually just comes down to personal preference, or maybe the particular recipe you're following. Whether you are trying to create a premium blend or a cheaper oil blend will probably sway your decision too.

Jojoba oil, almond oil, and apricot oil are all wonderful, but more expensive than their easy-to-find counterparts. In Australia, you can sometimes find these premium oils at your local health food store or sometimes even the chemist. Can't find what you're after? We have our V6 carrier oil blend of a number of carrier oils ready to use for all your diluting purposes.

Creating a bath oil with any essential oil and carrier oil is a great way to start using your essential oils. You could also create an all natural cleanser with your favourite essential oil for skincare, and a premium carrier oil.  Facial cleansing with oil using an oil cleanser has become very popular, although it may seem a bit hard to get used to at first!
Back Massage Oil | The Oil House
Back Massage Oil

Why You Need a Carrier Oil

The main reason to use a carrier oil is for dilution. This is especially important for what is called “hot” oils. These are the oils that if placed directly onto skin, (particularly when it comes to sensitive body parts) would give a “burning” feeling. Think of hot chilli. You wouldn’t want this in a bath with you!

But sometimes, warming is good. Mmm, like hot chocolate, and blankets beside the fire. Warming essential oils like Black Pepper Oil (supposedly good for spicing it up in the bedroom!) a warming Wintergreen or Oregano oil foot rub, or a massage with Panaway blend after the gym. Warming up can be healthy!

Properly diluted, these essential oils are able to give us their deep restorative benefits, such as calming and relaxing, without the unwanted burning sensation.  This is actually why many people are warned off, or avoid using essential oils. They can be mighty uncomfortable, and make for a “bad experience” if not used correctly.

It is also the case with the quality of essential oil you are using. “Cheaper” essential oils sometimes contain synthetic “filler” ingredients. These additive ingredients are not made to be used directly on skin, such as in the bath. Make sure you are using a high quality pure essential oil. Check the label if you’re unsure. You should only see ingredients you understand like botanical plant names. Best to shop from a reputable, well-known supplier of premium essential oils. Check out why we use Young Living essential oil quality here.

If you're new to essential oils, the easiest way to "get it right" is to:
  • use a diffuser, as this disperses essential oils into the air in tiny particles
  • avoid the essential oils that are labelled as "hot" oils
  • use essential oil blends as they come pre-mixed
  • or massage oils, as they are diluted and ready to use.

So what will you be creating first? A massage oil, foot oil, or bath oil? What carrier oil is your favourite? Let us know in the comments below.

Where Do I Apply Essential Oils?

18/6/2020

Many people are curious as to where they should put their essential oils on their body. This infographic shows many areas of the body that you can use oils on. You can always dilute your essential oil in a vegetable oil or carrier oil to make it go  further. Dilution will also help if the oil is considered a "hot" oil, such as Oregano, that, due to its spicy nature, can produce a "burning" feeling on the skin if used directly on sensitive skin areas. Most essential oils however can be used directly on skin. (be sure to test first)

My personal favourite ways to use oils on my body are as follows:
  • on wrists for daily perfume (my pick: Joy)
  • on forehead and temples at night before bed (my pick: Lavender)
  • back massage (love all of them!)
  • bottoms of feet and chest before bed in winter (RC or diluted Oregano)
  • abdomen (when feeling stodgy) - Digize for sure
  • refreshing face mist, made from distilled water and a few drops of essential oil (frankincense or floral oils)

Picture
You can find all the suggested essential oils and oil blends from the infographic here, including more information on how to use them in your life:
HEAD: Peppermint, MGrain, Tranquil
NECK: Deep Relief, Joy, Stress Away
SHOULDERS: Peppermint, Panaway, Wintergreen
HEART: Release, Frankincense, Bergamot
CHEST: Eucalyptus, Breathe Again, RC
WRISTS: Lavender, Stress Away, Jasmine
ABDOMEN: Digize, Fennel, Dragon Time
LEGS: Melaleuca, Geranium, Chamomile
KNEES: Copaiba, Cool Azul, Panaway
FEET: Lavender, Cedarwood, Tea Tree
What's your favourite way to use essential oils?

Essential Oils for "Sick" Room Spray

4/3/2020

Picture
Essential Oils for Sick Room Spray
I'm sure you're familiar with sprays for deodorising otherwise smelly spaces. These sprays freshen up rubbish bins, pet areas, mould and mildew stinky spots around the house. They can also be used to freshen up rooms that have been otherwise unoccupied for a while, or if there has been a sickness in the family, these sprays come in handy for keeping "vomit smells" (eww.) from wafting through the house.
You can make your own with a simple spray bottle, and some essential oils. Dilute with your favourite room spray recipe. This recipe is usually comprised of water mixed with a small amount of witchhazel, vodka, or isopropyl alcohol, and then, with the addition of your essential oils, you're ready to spritz away. For small spray bottles I use about 5-10 drops of the oil of my choice, or up to three different essential oils together. These are the essential oils we recommend for deodorising rooms. I won't go into detail about the activity and use of each of these essential oils, but you'll have this list up your sleeve should you ever want to make your own. We recommend you do your research on the powerful benefits of these oils, and the herbs that go into making them.

These essential oils are so multipurpose, we think every family should have them in supply. You could use them in a vaporiser, in a bath (remember to leave out or heavily dilute "hot oils" like Thyme or Oregano- these are brilliant for foot odor or foot rub), or a few drops on a pillow or face washer, or in a carrier oil for an uplifting massage... especially for the one who needs some TLC!

1. Eucalyptus
2. Tea Tree (Melaleuca)
3. Ginger
4. Thyme
5. Oregano
6. Lemon
7. Orange
8. Geranium

9. Melissa (Lemon Balm)
10. Lavender

Take care! I hope you, or your loved one feel better soon. Sending up a prayer for those reading this :)

1920's Gatsby Party Australian Style

12/11/2019

Picture
Picture
1920's fashion is one of my favourite things, so when it came time to host a celebration, I knew exactly what I wanted... Gatsby inspired Hollywood Glamour of the 1920's please! I'm sure alot of you can tell, due to my crazy "pinning on a theme" that once I have an idea in my head, I can get a little obsessive over it...

I started by sending out these cute "save the date" invites via text message, as this event is coming around rather quickly, so decisions have to be made pretty much on the fly. When I asked my cousin how long she took to plan her vow renewal and birthday, she said two years. Oops. Here I am, trying to plan something wonderful two months out... (We're all mad here!)

I discovered a great online shop (in Australia-yay) that just sells Flapper Dresses..  Enter the Flapper Boutique! *** stars in eyes*** They stock a beautiful range of gatsby styled dresses.

I will be pairing my flapper dress with gloves, beautiful jewellery and a hairpiece. Many costume shops sell the specific replica version of the Gatsby headpiece and gloves that Daisy Buchanan wore from the movie. I could try and find some lovely Mary Janes style shoes too... JJ's House stocks some cute varieties, and reasonably priced too. Although it probably wont be cold enough, I'd love a faux fur stole to throw over my shoulders!

I decided on an easy colour theme of black, gold, white and just a touch of red. Gatsby to me is simply sparkles, glitz and glam. Ensure you include Hollywood glamour and Art Deco elements.

We discussed venues, and are still deciding between a beautiful vintage hall, in the Byron Bay hinterland, or an elegant poolside party closer to the Coast. This ties into the decision of figuring out whether to have a grand but relaxed shindig with all the kids included, or a standup cocktail affair for adults. Decisions, decisions! Haven't even begun to think about food! More on that in another post I suppose.

If you want to see Gatsby inspired party ideas, that many creatives have come up with, including Gatsby costumes, 1920's accessories, 1920's makeup, head over to my Party Planners Paradise page on Pinterest- which feeds my obsession! You'll also find ideas for decorating a Gatsby party, costumes for the "support" staff (or friends) including "cigarette" girls who hand out chocolate cigars, or fun vintage lollies like "Fads", invitation ideas including fonts, favour ideas, food and drink ideas including a champagne tower. I'm running around like a chicken with its head cut off, thinking 1920's music as I fall exhausted to bed at night!

Got any great Gatsby inspired party ideas you'd like to share? What would you wear to a Gatsby party?
We'd love to hear from you!

Feel free to browse our range of all natural lippies, for your favourite "Gatsby" Lipstick colour for a classic vintage 1920's look, and pair with black mineral mascara, full of essential oil ingredients for lush lashes.

Holiday Fragrance for a Fresh Clean Home
Holiday Fragrance
Holidays are not too far away, and with it the "joy and excitement" of having kids home from school, and spending more days off at home. It also signifies the beginning of the craziness of shopping, planning for visitors, and the hectic pace of keeping up with the latest and greatest presents this year... (#exhausted!) So take a moment for yourself, grab a cuppa, and enjoy the idea of these holiday fragrances that may help you enjoy this time at home just a little bit more. Baby, go relax!

#1 Favourite Holiday Fragrance: Thieves.
Hands down the holiday fave, with cinnamon and cloves, rosemary and lemon, the fragrance of holiday cookies and baking! We love it in our aroma diffuser to mist this spicy fragrance around the house as we meet, mix, and mingle with family and friends. Add a few drops to a spray bottle with water and spritz around for a great natural air freshener before guests arrive. If you love the smell of cinnamon, this is the one for you! If you've never experienced the aroma of Thieves, imagine a Chai tea scent, but much stronger, and more delicious... and that's saying something because we LOVE our Chai.

#4 Citrusy and Fresh
Freshen up walls, clean floors, bathrooms, and kitchens with our citrus essential oils range. Try Tangerine (Mandarin) or Bergamot, Lime, Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit.. whatever your favourite citrus fruit! Dilute a few drops into a spray bottle, or mop bucket, or wall wash. Make your own surface spray with any of these oils and your home will smell AMAZING and fresh. Grab a cheap reed diffuser, switch out the chemical fragrance, and add in your citrus essential oil. The difference will blow you away- there is nothing like a pure, natural fragrance! These oils are so pure, you can even use them in your cooking- which can't be said for many oils on the market today. (Seriously. Do not ingest oils without proper research.) Not sure which of these to choose? We have a citrus fresh blend that is perfect for you- a blend of citrus and mint, ready to go, or our Stress Away blend which is based on Lime is another favourite among citrus lovers...

Made from tree resin, these little bottles pack a powerful scent that just can't be described. Widely used since Biblical times, Frankincense and Myrrh help you find grounding, and promote a beautiful complexion for dry skin. #6 Blessed Blends
Blends are the easiest way to start with essential oils if you've never tried them before. Blends are simply a mix of premium oils that have been chosen to go together to enhance their unique properties, so they are ready to go for massages, diffusing, bath or bedtime.  Blends are for beginners, to help you to experience a mix of oil fragrances, much like a perfume. Speaking of perfume, these oils can also be worn as a natural perfume or hair oil fragrance. You'll soon discover your favourite. We have a few blends that are great go-to recipes for the holidays. Your family and friends will be asking "what is that delicious smell?" - without any effort on your part to slave away in the kitchen.
